In the late 12th century, King Richard I of England, affectionately known as King Richard the Lionheart, displayed the first-ever Royal Arms of England.
Originally the shield symbol was engraved with 2 lion reliefs but eventually, a third lion was added in the middle guarding the two lions on its sides.
The third lion was added by King Richard the Lionheart I.
King Richard’s three lions remained until 1369 when the Plantagenet King Edward III altered the Royal Arms design to include the fleur-de-lis, reputedly in an effort to strengthen his claim to the French crown.
The surface of the coin depicts the lion’s face turning to the left, which symbolizes the arms of the kingdom, around the coin the decoration of the kingdom’s roses and the year of issue.
Back of the coin Queen Elizabeth II, the name of the coin, value by Oz, and the level of purity.
